Carrara and Pisa marble quarries

An excursion immersed in history and breathtaking scenery: we take you on a trip to discover the marble quarries of Carrara and Pisa.

Everything’s ready to go! The group departs from the Cruise Terminal of the port of La Spezia and, after a journey of little more than an hour through the beautiful landscapes that only Tuscany can offer, we reach our first destination: the majestic marble quarries of Carrara, at the foot of the Apuan Alps.

This is where the story begins. Here we find excavations reminiscent of vast amphitheatres that were discovered for the first time by the ancient Romans an incredible 2000 years ago.

The capital of the Roman Empire was built using this white marble, not forgetting the fact that some of the great artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini and Donatello also made use of it.

We are in front of the world’s most famous marble, dedicated to the study of sculpture for centuries. We discover all the secrets of this precious material knowing that, at the end of the day, we will take away an unexpected piece of cultural baggage.

The bus is back on the road, now heading to a city where the art is just as spectacular, the magnificent capital of Tuscany: Pisa.

Our tour starts from Piazza del Duomo where, once again, art and tourism come together in a place that attracts millions of tourists every year.

Standing in front of these monuments, the nickname given by Gabriele D’Annunzio – “Piazza dei Miracoli” – starts to make a little more sense; in 1910, in fact, he dubbed the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Cemetery and the Bell Tower miracles, to emphasise just how much beauty was concentrated in one place.

The final part of our excursion is dedicated to the quintessential star of the city, famous all over the world: the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

At 56 metres high, it is most certainly one of the most photographed monuments (and in the weirdest poses!) in the world.

But the famous Tower is not just the backdrop for wacky holiday snaps. In fact, a wide range of films were shot here, including “Amici Miei”, some of Totò’s films, and… Superman III. Lights, camera, action!

Have you found out yet exactly why the Leaning Tower of Pisa leans? We have, thanks to this magnificent day trip!

Would you like to spend a day discovering Pisa and the world’s most famous marble? Take a look to find all the information you need and set off on a trip with us!

Surprise!

On our way back, we will visit an olive oil mill, Frantoio Lucchi e Guastalli, a spectacular location with thousands of years of history surrounded by beautiful greenery.

After stopping for a few minutes to admire the truly jaw-dropping views, we dedicate our stop-over to a visit of the mill and a tasting of oils and typical local products: a real treat for the senses!
